- Surface Preparation - Every project begins with a properly prepared surface. We clean the area thoroughly, removing dirt, dust, and loose debris to ensure strong adhesion. Any damaged areas are patched to create a solid base.
- Application of Chip Oil - Next, a hot liquid asphalt emulsion (commonly referred to as chip oil) is evenly sprayed across the surface. This acts as the binding agent that holds the stone in place and seals the pavement from water intrusion.
- First Stone Layer – #7 Stone Immediately after the oil is applied, we spread #7 stone (approximately 3/8” in size). This larger aggregate forms the primary structural layer, providing strength, traction, and durability.
- Rolling and Compaction - The surface is then compacted using pneumatic rollers. This step presses the #7 stone firmly into the oil, ensuring proper embedment and long-term performance.
Optional Double Chip Upgrade
For a smoother, tighter finish, we offer a double chip seal system:
- Second Application of Chip Oil A lighter coat of asphalt emulsion is applied over the first layer to prepare for the final finish.
- Second Stone Layer – #89 Stone We then apply #89 stone (a smaller, finer aggregate around 1/4” or less). This layer fills the gaps between the larger #7 stone, creating a more compact and refined surface.
- Final Rolling and Finishing The surface is rolled again to lock in the #89 stone. After curing, any loose aggregate is swept away, leaving a clean, uniform finish
